UPDATE: DOJ’s Rescission into Phoenix Police Investigation and Results Leaves Uncertainty for Police Reform

May 24, 2025, 12:35PM MSTJust this past Wednesday The United States Department of Justice announced on its’ website that it will cease all Civil Rights investigations into multiple police departments across the country. This decision comes days before the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, which was committed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of second-degree murder along with two other charges of Floyd’s death. The anniversary of Floyd’s tragic death comes on Sunday, May 25, where a nation of police departments, Phoenix Police included, may be breathing a sigh of relief from further action taken by the DOJ and the possible recommendations for federal oversight. This all based on the results of their investigation into the Phoenix Police Department in 2024.

“We are completely engaged with Phoenix Police and will continue to function as an agency that will recommend necessary changes, if needed, for better policing efforts in the community”, says Shannon Johani, current director of Office of Accountability and Transparency, a city of Phoenix sponsored agency.

Johanni has stated previously that they are not directly or indirectly in communication with the Department of Justice or their current role into the investigation and results of the Phoenix PD civil rights violations. How the Phoenix community will react or facilitate any concerning issues about the policing changes that they may have expected from the federal government is yet to be seen, and if OAT (Office of Accountability and Transparency) has the capacity to initiate and bring about any changes needed to the once labeled deadliest Police Department in the United States of America.
