Saturday, October 25, 2024, 1:15PM MST The Maricopa County Tabulations and Election Center held a media invite only event to showcase the start of the ballot counting process for the 2024 election. The center wanted to broadcast the transparency and due diligence so that the public is assured of the fair practices and security measures set in place for the 2024 election cycle.
“We want the public to know that this is a serious operation for the people of Maricopa County,” says Jennifer Liewer, Deputy Elections Director for Communications.
Maricopa County is the fourth largest county in the United States, with a current population of 4.5 million people. The center made national headlines in the 2020 Elections and 2022 Arizona Primaries when claims were made of fraudulent activity and interference. The center was under a lot of scrutiny from some of the public and Donald Trump, which lead to a flurry of protest across Maricopa County and the center as well, with workers even being intimidated and threatened.
The Maricopa County Tabulations and Election Center, also known as the MCTEC, started early voting and mail-in ballot counting on Wednesday of this week and wanted local media there to share the stages of the ballot counting process. While in the nearly windowless building we were led to two separate areas. One area which is the receiving area, and the other area was the sorting area. Both areas houses over 600 total workers and that is set to increase, all the employees are county employees with the exception of a few volunteers.

With the total employees being equal in bipartisan, they wanted to make sure that each couple at a sorting table were on different sides politically. “This is just to make sure that there is equality in sorting, showing no favoritism for one table,” says Adrian Borunda, Bilingual Communications Officer.

“We plan on creating periodic media events to keep everyone informed this election season, we want to make sure all transparency is there,” says Liewer.

As the 2024 election comes to an end for voting purposes in less than two weeks, the MCTEC says that they plan on staying busy close to two weeks after the November 5th voting deadline. They are expecting a very close race, and Maricopa County again may sit at the center of the next winner of the Presidential Election.
